Pokertionary: Prop Bet

Prop bet= Proposition bet

As if playing poker wasn’t gambling enough, a lot of poker players, myself included like to spice up the game with some additional bets to keep the game juicy.

If you have ever watched the early seasons of high stakes poker you would have seen them making some references to prop bets and the one that was most visable to the viewer was the seven deuce bounty which meant that any player that won a pot with 72 in their hand got paid $500 from the other players at the table.

The 72 bounty game is one that shows up on occasion at the home game. Not everyone is a fan of the game though as it can cause some pretty hectic hands with players trying to bluff like crazy in order to win the bounty bet and often bluffing off a huge part of their stack in order to do it.

Other games that show up from time to time are the suits where 4 players will take a suit each and if the flop comes all that players suit they get paid.  A scarier version would be the one Ivey and Zigmund were playing red/black for $50,000 a flop as there will always be more of one of those cards on a three card flop.

Ontario and the Rapper often play a high low pair game with each player taking the high or low cards Ace through 6 or 8 though King with 7 being a push and if a flop come 2 of those cards there is a payoff, three of a kind double the payoff.

I find these games keep things a bit more lively and keeps you more interested in the game and adds another level of thinking when you start playing red/black for sure.

Home Game: WFF

Have to start reloading all these, sorry if you have already seen them.

No not WTF, WFF.

Hello poker fans and welcome back to the show. Sorry I have been away hanging around with the beautiful people that only the film world can produce. No super models like last year, but good fun and a great learning experience.

The Rapper arrives late to the game at Chateau Chez J6 and the action is already hot and heavy. In attendance is the Mouth, Poker Dave, and Ace sitting on a huge stack of chips built with his bare hands and flopping a boat and slow playing it against the trips of another sucker, J6, Woody and Nice Guy Eddie, the home game welcomes the return of KGB who had been away back in Russia of Hungary or wherever the hell he is from for the past year and a half, Ontario arrives a little after the Rapper and takes Poker Dave’s place who needs to go hang on the sofa for a bit.

Pretty quickly it gets hairy when Ace calls an all in from Woody and Nice Guy Eddie for stack with 77; now normally when Ace does that he turns over AA, this time he is actually still slightly the favourite against KQ and AT from Woody. Well the Law of Averages takes over and Nice Guy Eddie flops the nuts with 9TJ and neither can hit their two outer to derail him. Blam! Ace takes a hit to the great wall of Japan.

J6 not wanting to be left out of the “making bad calls” hall of fame raises, then calls an all in from Woody with Q8*. Woody turns over AJ and is ahead by miles, but calls the hand as a loser and sure enough J6 goes Queen and Eight in the river to make two pair. Yikes!

*update: J6 has informed me that it wasn’t Q8 he was playing but the monster Q8 SUITED!

Not long after that Woody raises and the Rapper calls with 72; now I know what you’re saying, “72? WTF are you calling with 72 for?” well there are two common prop bets in the Home Game, 72 and J6 and arriving late the Rapper wasn’t sure which one was on and not wanting to give away his hand he decided to just play it and see how it went.

Flop comes 37T with two spades and the Rapper leads out for half the pot thinking that most hands that Woody would have bet with would have missed. Woody calls and the turn is the 2 of clubs, now judging from the way Woody called the Rapper sees flush draw written all over his face and not wanting to give him the price he decides to push for 5X the pot. Woody hums and haws which usually means call, and sure enough he calls and says “you win I just have a flush draw” the last card comes off the 7 of spades and Woody says “sorry bro I sucked out on you” and turns over J6 of spades for the flush. The rapper turns over the 72 for the boat and the crowd goes wild, ship it and a little extra for the prop bets and the Rapper has a stack.

Woody is not without a little luck though and cracks Ontario’s Aces when his Q6 suited rivers the Trip Queen to trump him.

The Rapper quickly relives Woody of his ill gotten gains though when he sucks out a J on teh turn to make a higher Aces Up over Woody’s A5.

The Rapper only really missteps once when he calls an all in from KGB when his T5 hits top two pair on the flop and is crushed when KGB turns over TT to have him drawing 1%. Nyet on the draw and KGB is back in the game. Two pair is still not a good hand. But don’t feel too bad for the Rapper cause he already had cracked KGB’s QQ a while earlier with a 43 when the flop came 449 and KGB was betting out of position.

The all ins are fast and furious the rest of the night with J6 getting the goods and somehow managing to have his QQ hold up against three other random Ace and King hands to take down the biggest pot of the night right at the end, J6 finally stops the decent though he is pretty deep and is looking a long way up. Maybe it was the steak that gave him the extra boost to make it deep into the night.
